Amen. Safety is not a choice.

To be clear, when a worker's death is caused by safety breaches - it is a crime and it has alway been a crime. However, the worker's death has never been an element of a crime under OHS law before.Now - the death of the worker is recognised by a law. It is an element of this new manslaughter offence. This is new. Also now - if a worker's death is caused by a mindblowing ignorance of safety laws , or as reflected by a standard of criminal negligence, it's a bigger crime -- and, after 1 July 2024, there will be a door to a cold, dark cell in prison being held open by a few hundred angry family members who have waited for decades for this law to be passed in South Australia.

On Monday 29 April 2024, South Australians will gather and remember the workers who lost their lives because of their work, either through a traumatic event or the cruel effects of latent disease. The Workers’ Memorial Day Service continues to evolve in South Australia – as the families embark on their yearly mission to bring their loved ones to the fore. This year we are joined by our safety champions as they march from Parliament House to the Pilgrim Church to unite with the families with a minute’s silence. The service starts at 10.00am. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Clearly, we are not talking enough about risk assessment and hazard management ... and can we all take a moment for this guy ... that had to hurt! Hopefully he and his friends are okay.
