16th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge List Thread!

Rules: Dates: Dusk June 30-Dawn August 1st
Movies/TV shows should be labeled sci-fi or fantasy from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a sci-fi or fantasy label from one of those sites. Action/Sci-fi would be fine.
If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's sci-fi or fantasy or not, ask here.
Sci-Fi/Fantasy documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews. Documentaries include UFO and alien abduction type shows.
As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.
Use any counting method you prefer, as prize determination does not depend on number of items watched.
3 wild cards for all. Use for those shows you want to watch but know they really don't count but they're pretty close or borderline to counting.
Watching the movie with the commentary will count as an entry.
Watching multiple versions(theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie will also count.
Exceptions: 1: The Tarzan films are eligible to watch and count for the watch list, but not for the check list.
2. Superhero films. If they do not have a sci-fi/fantasy tag, they count for the watch list, but not for the check list.

Sci-fi/Fantasy Radio
I'm treating audio harshly since this is primarily a movie/tv challenge. That being said, one episode, 4 hours with commercials, of Coast to Coast counts as one entry. It's the same format for TV, only doubled. The topic of the show has to be sci-fi/fantasy related, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem with Coast to Coast.
If you're listening to something without commercials, or can skip them, you're looking at 3 hours of audio for one entry.
1/4 entry = 45 minutes without commercials and 60 with commercials.
1/2 entry = 90 minutes without commercials and 120 with commercials.
3/4 entry = 135 minutes without commercials and 180 with commercials.
1 entry = 180 minutes without commercials and 240 with commercials.

1. Soylent Green (1973)-TV:Set in the far future year 2022, Charlton Heston is a cop trying to solve a murder in an over-populated and polluted New York City. The movie is a bit silly in some of its predictions, but while global warming is a serious issue, at least we aren't eating people crackers, yet.

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1973)-TV:Set in the far future year 1991, Roddy McDowall plays the now-grown child of talking apes from the future who leads a revolution of ape slaves against their human masters. While screenwriter Paul Dehn thought making an explicit racial allegory with the 1965 Watts riots was ap rogressive racial statement in 1972, today it looks stale and offensive.

3. Johnny Mnemonic (1995)-Criterion Channel: Set in the far future year 2021, Keanu Reeves play a "mnemonic courier", an agent who smuggles data in a neural implant. The movie is supposed to be futuristic but it looks ridiculous today. The writers couldn't even get minor details right. the film opens with Keanu being awakened by an alarm on Thursday, January 17, 2021, but the 17th was a Sunday. A pity the screenwriters didn't use the Internet to check.

July 3rd3. ☼ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023): It's hard to believe it's been 6 years since the last Guardians movie. While I think the first one is easily the best, the 2nd and this one were fun as well (and if this is it for the series, I think it went out while still good). And yes ... Cosmo is a very good dog! ****
July 4th4. ☼ The Flash (2023): Once I past the ick factor of Ezra Miller (and could just enjoy the story for what it was), I thought this was very good. It probably helps to have the nostalgia factor of seeing Micheal Keaton's Batman again (along with Danny Elfman's music). And there were other fun bits, my favorite being

They really should've made it clear that this was part 1 of a two-parter, since the ending felt like a let-down. ***1/2

July 6th9. Space:1999 (1976): Season 2, "The AB Chrysalis", "Seed of Destruction"
10. ☼ Black Mirror (2023): "Loch Henry"; Space:1999 (1976): Season 2, "The Beta Cloud"
July 7th11. ☼ Linoleum (2022): I can see how this movie will divide viewers, especially those looking for a comedy (which is how this is first listed). But I thought it was pretty great, and it's a movie that warrants thinking about after watching. Even though it had a very different tone and plot, it had me thinking of other art-house "mind benders" like Donnie Darko and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. ****1/2
12. M3GAN (2022): It doesn't do anything new, and if you're at all familiar with horror movies you can pretty much see all the story beats coming. But it still does it in entertaining way. ***1/2
13. ☼ Black Mirror (2023): "Beyond the Sea"
July 8th14. ☼ Black Mirror (2023): "Mazey Day", "Demon 79"
July 9th15. ☼ Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023): As someone old enough to have seen the 80s Indiana Jones movies in the theater, it's a nostalgia thrill seeing Harrison Ford in the role again. As a movie, while a serviceable action movie it was fine ... but didn't seem anything special. ***1/2
16. ☼ The Witcher (2023): S3E4; Space:1999 (1976): Season 2, "Space Warp"
July 11th17. ☼ Nimona (2023): Pretty good for a Disney reject :D I really like the idea of carrying over a medieval fantasy story 1000 years into the future, where the kingdom has modern (if not advanced) technology. ****
July 13th18. ☼ Evil Dead Rise (2023): There's not much new to be done with the Evil Dead formula, though this throws in a couple of wrinkles moving the setting from the woods to a urban apartment building and adding a family element to the characters. ***1/2 Wildcard #1
19. ☼ Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham (2023): Batman + Cthulhu ... what's not to love? It's a mixture that works well, moving the setting to the 1920's. And it's fun to see reimagined villains like Penguin, Poison Ivy, Two Face, Killer Croc, and R'as al Ghul. ***1/2
July 14th20. ☼ Nine Days (2020): A movie you have to have patience for (and/or maybe be in the right mood). But if you're open, it packs a huge emotional wallop. ****1/2
21. ☼ I'm Your Man (2021): What sounds like a pretty trite concept (sci-fi rom com about a sceptical woman romantically matched with an android) tackles a lot, and does it very well. I appreciated it didn't go for an easy ending either. ****
July 16th22. ☼ The Witcher (2023): S3E5; ☼ Secret Invasion (2023): S1E4
23. The Terminator (1984): Usually horror movies (and despite it's sci-fi classification, this plays like a horror movie) have unlucky people in the wrong place at the wrong time. And there's a lot of them here ... but the police psychiatrist who leaves the station just as Arnold is entering was one lucky bastard! :D *****
24. Space:1999 (1976): Season 2, "The Bringer of Wonders"
July 17th25. ☼ Apples (2023): Not listed as sci-fi anywhere, but the fact that a central part of the story is a strange anmesia disease (and the weird methods of treating its victims) makes me think it should count. Very low key but moving in a quiet way, and I like that it doesn't overstay its welcome (running less than 90 minutes). **** Wildcard #2

July 18th27. ☼ The Expanse (2020): S5E1 and 2
July 20th28. ☼ Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022): Not sure how George Miller directorial follow-up to Mad Max: Fury Road missed me completely (especially one starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba), but it did. Very different kind of movie, through it features his strong visuals. I was really liking this up until the last third, where it unconvincingly shifted gears. ***1/2

45. Legend (1985): I watched the 113 minute "Director's Cut". To be honest this was never a movie I particularly enjoyed, though I bought it both in DVD and Blu Ray format (looking at it as a cult curio). It certainly falls short of expectations going from all the talent in front and behind the camera. Although it has a fantastic look, and it can be enjoyed if you're able to go with the languid dream-like pace (and not expecting much in the way of story, characters, or action). For me it's a toss up on Jerry Goldsmith's score versus the original Tangerine Dream. The latter, though dated, worked well with the atmosphere of the movie. Although the Goldsmith score had some nice songs (if the actual score of the movie was forgettable, outside of the music from those songs). ***
July 29th46. ☼ The Witcher (2023): S3E7-8
47. ☼ They Cloned Tyrone (2023): A lot of fun ... fortunately there was much much more to the story than cloning. I really enjoyed the 70's style of the movie (even though it was technically set in modern times). Great job by the three main characters, whose banter propelled the movie even during the slower spots. Reminded me of Sorry to Bother You, mixed with things like Us, The Stepford Wives, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, not to mention a whole mess of Blaxploitation movies. ****
48. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999): It's been a while since I've seen this. My impression is like it was when this first came. I wasn't as harsh on it as many. Even a lower tier Star Wars movie is good. There are some great set pieces (the pod race, and the entire "battle for Naboo" in the last 30 minutes). And John Williams doesn't rest on his laurels in the prequels, coming up with good new themes. Although the main negatives remain ... Jar Jar Binks and everything Lucas comes up with for "comic relief" are cringe-worthy. ***1/2
July 30th49. ☼ Doom Patrol (2022): S4E5-6.
50. Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002): Like Phantom Menace, this was pretty much how I remembered it. While we have very little Jar Jar, the romance scenes are godawful (though John Williams has a nice new theme for it). Hayden Christiansen's Anakin is wooden and awkward, though Lucas is probably more to blame for that than the actor. But this has an absolute banger of an third act that pretty much saves the movie. ***1/2

53. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005): Easily the best of the prequels, though not without it's own problems. Anakin going from all-around good guy to ruthless child murderer felt rushed (all because he needs the Dark Side of the force to save his wife from a danger only seen in dreams). And Vader's "Nooo!!!" at the end comes across as silly ... and I remember laughs in the theater originally (maybe it would've been better to do that in Hayden Christiansen's voice and not James Earl Jones). ****
