Changed w/o discussion: Sequel Number Snarl (2024)

The image currently on Sequel Number Snarl was added by Ngp3 without any previous forum discussion. In addition, even on its own merits, I don't think it really illustrates the trope: the trope is about un-numbered installments in a series making it so that Numbered Sequels don't accurately reflect how many installments there are overall, but Final Fantasy X-2's name clearly indicates that it's a sequel to Final Fantasy X. Even if the numbering is confusing, when viewed in a vacuum, anyone would assume that X-2 comes after X. (Not to mention that I don't think you'd need to use the entire box art when the page is focused solely on titles.)

As for suggestions for a potential replacement, the only thing I could think of would be using fellow Square Enix series Kingdom Hearts. The most concise approach would be something like "Kingdom Hearts logo (#1) —> Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories logo (#2) —> Kingdom Hearts II logo (#3)," which gets the gist of the trope across without being overly long.

To be clear, Changed Without Discussion only applies to pages that had / have had images before. There's no rule that requires people to get discussion for images otherwise.

I don't mind pulling if it's unclear, but the current misconception that IP is necessary in all cases is a bit of a pet peeve that I needed to clarify here.

Here's a go using Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days, Kingdom Hearts χ and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep. I can rearrange to a 1x3 if this is too crowded.

Yeah, I'd try a different arrangement. I didn't even see the numbers.

Sure, here's a couple of 1x3's. Not sure whether X or Chain of Memories looks better / is more readable. I like X better for the green, but it might make people think it's a "10" like FFX .

x9 (post 3): For what it's worth, I did check to see if there was anywhere to raise concerns about images added to pages unilaterally, but I couldn't find anything. (I'll admit "poor image" may have been a better choice here.)

Getting back to the matter at hand: I made my initial suggestion into a proper image. The reason I chose the first three games in the series was because I felt like it would be the easiest to comprehend without requiring familiarity with the series. This isn't to slight the image in post 9 (), which also works, but I feel like it's a little less direct without including their release order. (Also, while I'll admit my caption here is kind of dry, I wanted to make it clear that Chain of Memories is a proper sequel and not a spin-off or something similar.)

I mean I went with the ones I did because there is still a whole lot of sequels between them. That said I like yours better than mine.

We could probably use release year just slightly above and to the left of the hearts in the logo rather than numbering, but FWIW I think readers will interpret vertical order as release order.

Just for fun, we could add "and fourth in chronological order." to the end of the caption.

Edit: Ugh, I forgot how convoluted the series is. It's: 1, COM, 358/2 then 2.

Release date is what matters for this, not chronology (this isn't Anachronic Order). Kingdom Hearts II was released in 2005 and 358/2 was released in 2009.

Edit: And the actual claim that Kingdom Hearts 2 is fourth in the chronological order is really wrong; so wrong that I wouldn't even want to figure out where Kingdom Hearts 2 actually places in chronological order.

I found this infograph on the internet and I think the titles are more clear here. There is also a literal release timeline with actual dates.

Also more interesting to look at than same-y logos.
