What is the meaning of Dydd Gwyl? ›

Traditionally, St David's Day, or Dydd Gwyl Dewi is known as the Feast of St David, a day when Welsh people hold celebrations to honour Saint David, or Dewi Sant. The saint is honoured with special parades, Welsh symbols, and concerts.

His last words to his followers came from a sermon he gave on the previous Sunday: 'Be joyful, keep the faith, and do the little things that you have heard and seen me do. ' The phrase 'Gwnewch y pethau bychain mewn bywyd' - 'Do the little things in life' - is still a well-known maxim in Wales.

In an age-old ritual dating back to 1916 on the battlefields of the Somme in WW1, every St David's Day, soldiers of the Welsh Guards are presented with ceremonial leeks. In turn, St David's Day has become symbolic of their bravery.

Saint David in Welsh (St David the person) is "Dewi Sant"

Welsh people will also greet each other with 'Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus', which translates as happy St Davids Day in Welsh. In 2023, St Davids Day is Wednesday, 1st March.

Significance of the day

David's fame as a teacher and his asceticism spread among Celtic Christians, and he helped found about 1200 monasteries. His foundation at Glyn Rhosyn became an important Christian shrine, and the most important centre in Wales. The date of Saint David's death is believed to be 1 March 589.

After his death, his influence spread far and wide, first through Britain and then by sea to Cornwall and Brittany. In 1120, Pope Callactus II canonised David as a Saint. Following this he was declared Patron Saint of Wales. Such was Davids influence that many pilgrimages were made to St.

The first of March is Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Sant, or St David's Day, the day when Wales celebrates its patron saint. A renowned preacher, his final words to his followers before his death on 1 March 589 were “Be joyful, keep the faith, and do the little things that you have heard and seen me do.”

ANALYSIS. On this reading, David's last words are really God's, words claiming that a godly king is God's blessing to the nation. As long as God is with David, the godless have no hope.
